New Sports Equipment for 20 Girl’s Schools in Kabul and Aibak

Another ten schools located in Aibak in Samangan province will receive similar equipment during the next weeks. About 30,000 female students will benefit from improved physical education (PE) classes. The German government funded the new equipment at a total cost of roughly AFN 1.2 million.

Together with representatives of the S4D programme, the Provincial Education Director Dr Mohammad Sayed Mansoor handed over the new equipment to the principals and teachers of Tajwar Sultana High School in Kabul. On this occasion, Mr Azizullah Azizi, a PED representative, stated that, “We appreciate the cooperation of the German government and we are emphasising a better use of these sports items in school, so we can achieve a better output in the future.”

Last year already, S4D organised trainings for the 43 PE teachers holding classes at 20 schools in Kabul and Samangan. The workshops focused on practical-oriented physical education and their adaption to different conditions such as the size of a schoolyard or available equipment. The new equipment, combined with the new knowledge, enables teachers to set up high-quality sports programmes for their students.

The Afghan-German Cooperation and the Afghan Ministry of Education fund and organise training activities and the provision of sports equipment. They aim at ensuring high-quality physical education in Afghan schools.

The initiative “Sports for Development” (S4D) is aiming at integrating physical education classes as a practically orientated subject in Afghan schools. Therefore, the project trains sports teachers, provides necessary sports equipment and develops well-adapted curricula. The implementing organisation Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH cooperates closely with the Afghan Ministry of Education in order to develop specific strategies and training schedules for teachers.
