Kabul, 13th December 2018 – Yesterday, a national conference for so-called Gender Focal Points (GFPs) took place in Kabul. GFPs are female volunteers that offer legal support to women in their communities. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) hosted the event to express its gratitude for their work. In total, more than 70 people from eight Afghan provinces participated, majorly women. Attendees discussed ways to improve cooperation between the MoWA, its provincial departments, and GFPs. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Promotion of the Rule of Law in Afghanistan (RoL) facilitated and financed the event at a total cost of more than AFN 860.000.

Today, Afghanistan’s International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Afghanistan) published the International Commercial Terms (Incoterms 2010) in Afghanistan. The terms are a global standard for the most common terms used in trade to avoid legal uncertainties and misunderstandings. More than 200 guests, male and female, attended the launch event in Kabul, including high-profile Afghan officials such as the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Minister of Economics, the Minister of Higher Education and Kabul University’s Chancellor as well as relevant stakeholders. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Sustainable Economic Development and Employment Promotion (SEDEP) facilitated the launch of Incoterms 2010 in Afghanistan.

Yesterday, a 16-days campaign that has started in Afghanistan on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) on 25th November ended. Its theme was Hear Me Too; End Violence against Women and Girls. Several Afghan Departments of Justice (DoJ) conducted related activities in their respective provinces. Representatives from various governmental entities and civil society organisations attended the events. The campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of combating violence against women and girls in Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Promotion of the Rule of Law in Afghanistan (RoL) supported the events in Badakhshan, Balkh, Baghlan, Takhar and Kabul.

Kabul, 10th December 2018 – Today, three Afghan professors and lecturers from Kabul Polytechnic University, Kabul University, and Balkh University returned to Kabul. For two weeks, they participated in a training at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam, Germany. They learned how to operate GFZ’s software SeisComp 3 for localising and analysing earthquakes. It is used to better understand tectonic activities in central Asia, including Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Academic Mining Education in Afghanistan (AMEA) programme facilitated the activity.

Argo District, Badakhshan, 4th December 2018 – Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation handed over a rehabilitated irrigation canal to the Governor’s Office of Argo District, Badakhshan. The canal is located in the Sarai Dara area and benefits about 4,200 residents who now have access to sufficient irrigation for their agricultural land. In addition, a Local Water User Association (LWUA) that comprises about 600 private water users in the area was established to ensure the canal’s proper management and maintenance. A newly constructed office for the association provides an adequate working environment. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Stabilisation Programme Northern Afghanistan (SPNA) financed the construction works at a total cost of more than AFN 23 million.

Yesterday, the ground-breaking ceremony for constructing a 3-kilometers long asphalt road connecting Aybak and Dara-e Zhowandon village as well as an 800 meters long gravel road connection to Mazar-e Sharif - Kabul Highway took place in Aybak. Officials of Samangan’s Public Works Department (PWD) and the Afghan-German Cooperation attended the event. More than 22,000 citizens will benefit from the new transport infrastructure. The Afghan-German Cooperation funds the construction works at a total cost of about AFN 92 million.

Taloqan, Takhar, 4th December 2018 – Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation and the Taloqan River Basin Agency (TRBA) signed a contract over constructing a 1.5 kilometres long flood protection wall and rehabilitating an irrigation channel in Takhar. More than 20,000 residents of the villages Haji Rashid and Zargari will benefit. About 30 provincial officials attended the contract signing in Takhar’s provincial capital Taloqan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) finances the project at a total cost of about AFN 122 million.

Kabul, 4th December 2018 – Today, the two-day Learner Centred Methodology and Primary Education National Conference ended in Kabul. About 180 people participated, comprising high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education as well as academics and staff from selected universities, the Teacher Education Directorate (TED) and 49 Teacher Training Colleges (TTC). The Afghan-German Cooperation and the Swiss government supported the TED in conducting the event. More than 24,500 students at TTCs and at related branches on district level (sub-TTCs), including more than 14,000 women, shall benefit from improved training.

This week, the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan took place in Switzerland. At the event, the international community showed solidarity with the Afghan people and government in their efforts for peace and prosperity. On that occasion, Germany provided additional funding of about AFN 5.4 billion to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) via KfW Development Bank. From its creation in 2002 until 2017, the fund administered by the World Bank has already benefitted about 11.5 million Afghans So far, the German government has contributed over AFN 62 billion to the fund, making Germany one of the largest bilateral donors.

Today, 34 female students and four lecturers from Balkh University, Kabul Polytechnic University and Kabul University returned to Afghanistan. They participated in a one-week geology and mining excursion to Iran to earn on-site experience. The Research Institute of Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) planned and conducted the field trip. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Academic Mining Education in Afghanistan (AMEA) facilitated the activity’s implementation.
