Today, the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) and the Ministry of Industries and Commerce (MoIC) conducted a National Public and Private Dialogue (NPPD) on access to finance for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Around 100 people, including women and men, participated in the event in Kabul. They came from various public institutions and the private sector. Among others, these included line ministries, financial institutions, business associations and SMEs. Easier access to finance shall facilitate Afghanistan’s sustainable economic development. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the event.

Today, government consultations on cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Federal Republic of Germany in 2019 ended successfully. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) committed to invest about AFN 5.1 billion (EUR 59 million), focussing on good governance, sustainable economic development as well as urban development and municipal infrastructure. An additional AFN 8.7 billion (EUR 100 million) shall be allocated to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF). Since 2001, the German government has invested about AFN 345 billion (EUR 4.06 billion) in Afghanistan.

Yesterday, the ground-breaking ceremony for electrifying the villages of Hazar Sumuch and Kunjak took place. Government officials and representatives of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) and the Afghan-German Cooperation attended the event. Both villages are located in Hazar Sumuch District, Takhar Province. About 14,000 locals will soon benefit from a reliable energy supply. DABS will implement the project, supported by the German Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The Afghan-German Cooperation funds the construction works at a total cost about AFN 124 million.

Yesterday, the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) and the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Promoting Good Governance in the Extractive Sector in Afghanistan (MinGov) came together in Kabul. On this occasion, they planned training activities for mines inspectors for 2019. In total, about 80 mines inspectors shall benefit from these training measures covering all Afghan provinces. MoMP and MinGov work together to improve mining governance to leverage the Afghan extractive sector’s full potential.

Yesterday, an Afghan delegation comprising 14 representatives of Afghanistan’s leading anti-corruption agencies arrived in Kabul. They returned from a five-day anti-corruption workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. There, around 40 attendees shared ideas on monitoring and evaluating anti-corruption activities and discussed ways to inform the public about achievements. The Afghan-German Cooperation coordinated the workshop together with the German-Indonesian programme Assistance in Preventing and Combating Corruption (APCC). U4 Resource Centre and the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) co-hosted the event.

Yesterday, the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) conducted an event themed ‘Increased Participation of Women in the Extractive Industry’ related to International Women’s Day. The activity brought together female entrepreneurs from the Afghan Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AWCCI) and the Afghanistan Chamber of Industries and Mines (ACIM) to facilitate exchange and cooperation. A particular focus was on how to promote women’s participation in the Afghan extractive sector. About 120 people, 100 of them women, participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the event.

This week, the Sixth Renewable Energy Coordination Committee (RECC) met at the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) in Kabul. About 60 attendees, including government officials and stakeholders from the private and public sector, discussed trending issues in the energy sector, such as the Afghan government’s 2000 megawatt renewable energy package. They also presented recent achievements and provided a status update on current activities. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) supported the event.

Yesterday, a workshop for journalists and representatives from Civil Society Organisations took place at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) in Kabul. In total, more than 20 people participated. The activity put particular emphasis on the Afghan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (AEITI) and the MoMP’s online transparency portal. It aimed at drawing journalists’ attention to the Afghan mining sector. The MoMP, the Afghan-German Cooperation and AEITI facilitated the workshop.

This week, provincial Departments of Women’s Affairs and the Afghan-German Cooperation conduct various activities in close cooperation on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March. These include celebrations, theatre programmes and the distribution of leaflets that inform about women’s rights and raise awareness of the importance of legal documents such as the Tazkira. In total, more than 3,000 visitors are expected at the events in Balkh, Baghlan, Jawzjan, Sar-e Pul, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan. Also, a legal helpline for women is now available that offers legal advice free of charge.

Today, a series of five-day workshops for staff from Provincial Education Departments (PED), Teacher Training Colleges (TTC), and schools ended in Badakhshan. In total, 150 people, including almost 70 women, participated. The seminars took place in Kabul and the provinces Herat, Balkh, Samangan and Badakhshan. Participants learned about recent changes in the Afghan education system and how to implement them. These changes aim at improving teacher training and thus overall education quality in Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Basic and Secondary Education Programme (BEPA) facilitated the events.
