Today, a three-week mining training ended for 15 Afghan mines in-spectors. Mines inspectors ensure that rules and regulations in the Afghan extractive sector are re-spected. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting good governance in the Af-ghan extractive sector helped organising and financing the mining training.

During the last months, the Afghan-German Cooperation built 13 new administrative buildings and three conference rooms for District Development Assemblies (DDAs) in Badakhshan, Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar. About 480 DDA members now benefit from an improved work environment. The German Stabilisation Programme Northern Afghanistan SPNA financed the new facilities’ construction at a total cost of about AFN 18.6 million.

Yesterday, Balkh’s Deputy Governor, Mr Abdul Basheir Tawhidy, inaugurated the Department of Justice’s (DoJ) new building in Mazar-e Sharif. The department’s former building burned down in 2015. Afterwards, the DoJ moved to an inadequately equipped rental house. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme to promote the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) funded the new DoJ building’s construction to help ensuring the population’s access to justice.

Yesterday, 120 community members and elders, civil society representatives and governmental employees attended the provincial feedback dialogue conference on reducing environmental degradation. In recent years, environmental protection has become a crucial topic in Afghanistan. The conference aimed at evaluating recent activities in this field, considering some for next year’s provincial strategy. The Legal Service in Afghanistan Organisation (LSAO) implemented the event, supported by the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL).

Mazar-e Sharif, Balkh, 31th December 2017 – Yesterday, Officials of Balkh Province and the German Cooperation representative graced with their attendance the ground-breaking ceremony to mark the first day of construction of the two kilometres Dasht-e-Shor Road in Nahri Shahi District, Balkh. Reconstruction of the two kilometres road will take an estimated 23 months including the time for winter breaks and will provide indirect and direct employment to some residents. The German Government finances the reconstruction with approximately AFN 100 million.

Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation handed over newly constructed and rehabilitated rooms as well as equipment to three girls’ schools in Baghlan province. Pol-e Khumri district also received multi-cell garbage boxes, and the Department of Information and Culture (DoIC) now owns an offset printing machine. The German Regional Capacity Development (RCD) programme funded the activities at a total cost of AFN 5 million.
Training of Minig Insectors in Herat

Today, a three-week technical training ended for 12 mines inspectors from the provinces Badghis, Farah, Ghor, Helmand, Herat, and Nimruz. The responsible trainers from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) had previously participated in a Training of Trainers (ToT) activity implemented by the German programme for promoting good governance in the Afghan extractive sector. The programme further supports the technical training of mines inspectors technically and financially.

Yesterday, two new libraries for Balkh University’s law and sharia faculties were officially inaugurated in Mazar-e Sharif. About 2,000 students, including 920 female ones, now have access to modern learning facilities and literature. The faculties’ deans and students as well as representatives of the Afghan-German Cooperation’s project for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) attended the event. The German government funded the new libraries at a total cost of more than AFN 1.1 million.

Yesterday, a two-day workshop on the law prohibiting sexual harassment of women ended in Feyzabad. 25 female and 15 male staff from the gender units of Badakhshan’s governmental institu-tions and civil society organisations participated. Gender units advocate women’s rights and ensure female participation at their respective institutions. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) financed and implemented the workshop togeth-er with the Department of Women’s Affairs.

Yesterday, a six-day workshop on transparency and publishing beneficial owners in the Afghan mining sector ended in New Delhi, India. 13 representatives of AEITI and the involved multi-stakeholder group consisting of relevant actors from the governmental, civil society and private sectors participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting good governance in the Afghan extractive sector supported the workshop technically and financially. Disclosing beneficial ownerships is a condition for full EITI membership.
