Feyzabad, Badakhshan, 8th May 2018 – Constructions on the hydropower plant in Feyzabad will now resume after clarifying geological circumstances. The hydropower plant will provide electrici-ty to Feyzabad’s entire population – in total about 60,000 people. The Afghan-German Cooperation funds the construction via KfW Development Bank at a total cost of AFN 3.7 billion. Constructions started in 2015 and shall be finished by December 2020.

New Delhi, India, 6th May 2018 –The Teacher Education Directorate (TED) conducted a five-day workshop on curriculum development based on learner-centred methodology. 17 TED members and lecturers from Teacher Training Centres (TTCs) in Balkh, Badakhshan, Herat and Samangan participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) supported the event. Around 180 TTC lecturers will directly benefit from the activity, resulting in improved lessons for about 26,000 female and 17,000 male students.

Today, a four-day capacity-building workshop ended for 25 employees from Balkh province’s Huquq bureaus and Family Counselling Centre. The activity aimed at improving the institutions’ citizen services by overcoming legal ambiguities related to mortgage law. Balkh’s Department of Justice (DoJ) conducted the training, supported by the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL). Huquqs have handled more than 77,000 civil cases since 2013.

Feyzabad, Badakhshan, 30th April 2018 – Badakhshan province’s Department of Women’s Affairs (DoWA) conducted a two-day introductory meeting for more than 20 so-called Gender Focal Points (GFPs). GFPs are female citizens who offer legal advice to women in their communities voluntarily. About 50 participants, including government officials and representatives from legal insti-tutions, civil society organisations (CSOs), and the police attended the event. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) implemented and funded the meeting. In total, about 100 GFPs offer their services in their respective provinces.

Kabul, 11th April 2018 – Today, the Afghanistan Renewable Energy Union (AREU) initiated a conference in Kabul to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency among entrepreneurs in Afghanistan. Around 120 representatives from line ministries, power utilities, the private sector, academia, the Women Initiative for Sustainable Energy (WISE) and the Youth Entrepreneur Ship Support (YES) initiative participated. The event addressed women and men equally. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the activity.

This week, Badakhshan’s Department of Justice (DoJ), civil society organisations (CSOs) and the Department of Women’s Affairs (DoWA) held a biannual coordination meeting. About 55 attendants, including Badakhshan’s deputy governor as well as representatives from 20 CSOs discussed how to improve cooperation. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for strengthening the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) supported the event.

Today, an extended power line and a newly constructed energy network were put into operation in the city of Pol-e Khomri, Baghlan. About 10,000 citizens in the residential area of Karkar now profit from a reliable electricity supply. The construction works took two years to complete. The German Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) and Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) implemented the project. The Afghan-German Cooperation financed the infrastructure at a total cost of about AFN 115.5 million.

Yesterday, the 16th Media Meeting took place in Kabul. Four experts and more than 50 journalists gathered at the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC). They discussed ways for the Afghan media to promote women’s inclusion in Afghanistan’s development process. The Afghan-German Cooperation and Mediothek Afghanistan hosted the event.

Kabul, 15th March 2018 – 20 employees of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) participated in a two-day workshop in Kabul. Topic: Gender equity and equality in the Afghan Mining Sector. The MoMP and the Ministry of Woman Affairs (MoWA) jointly organised the workshop, funded by the Afghan-German Cooperation’s project “Promoting Good Governance in the Extractive Sector in Afghanistan”. Since 2015, the Afghan-German Cooperation has supported several gender workshops in Kabul, Herat, Balkh and Kandahar.

Kabul, 14 March 2018 – This week, 11 female law graduates finished an internship at the Afghan Ministry of Justice (MoJ). The activity aimed at preparing the women for the job market and increasing their employability. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s project for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) supported the internship programme and assisted the participants financially.
